“You Don’t Have to Be Pretty. You don’t owe prettiness to anyone. Not to your boyfriend/spouse/partner, not to your co-workers, especially not to random men on the street. You don’t owe it to your mother, you don’t owe it to your children, you don’t owe it to civilization in general. Prettiness is not a rent you pay for occupying a space marked “female”.”
Diana Vreeland
Wow. More of our young girls need to hear this message. Actually, every woman young or old needs to hear it. Thanks for the reminder.

I am really, really, really, REALLY struggling with this right now. For so long I’ve felt that I had to be a certain way in order for me to be a real woman, and I’m learning that my mere existence is good enough.

I’d like to append this to those lousy Dove ads everyone thinks are so swell.

And yet, Diana Vreeland insisted on putting “pretty” women on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue. She didn’t walk the talk, did she?

True that. Let us raise up the sentiment, not the speaker.

It’s a little long, but I’m thinking of finding a place to tattoo these words on my body. Preferably where others can see them. Cheers

Michelle,
I read this a couple days ago and it stuck in my head.
One of the biggest struggles any of us has IN LIFE is filtering the ubiquitous bullshit washed into our brain regarding the definition of “pretty”. If a person buys-in to the message of magazines and billboards and tool calendars and television they allow assholes to manipulate their thoughts and choices.
I agree, no-one owes prettiness to anyone! And more importantly, “pretty” shouldn’t be judged, especially with other peoples’ quantifiers.

Amazing quote, I really wish our society would implement this type of freedom. It saddens me that we still live in a society that promotes objectification of women which causes so much harm it causes young girls.
Thank you for putting this quote up I will definitely send it to my friends,
Dave.
